Lead generation is often referred to as lead-gen and is a marketing tool, it means to create or generate potential customers to inquire about your business, product or service. In lead generation it is to actively target customers and generate sales, this means finding customers, drawing an interest to your product or service and then making the sale.

One way this is done in land based business there is trade shows for example where companies will have one of their sales reps at a table providing potential customers information about their product or service.

This type of site matches the proper business with the proper buyer and this can in effect generate a sale. Once this is done then the business is able to send by email their information about the product, their contact information and what the purchase of their product or service entails.  This in effect is a win-win situation for the customer and for the business, as the business makes a sale and the customer gets the product they wanted. This is a much more effective way of marketing over cold calling, the customer already has an interest in this specific type of product or business. Cold calling means that a full sales pitch needs to be convincing enough to interest a potential customer that had no prior interest in this type of product or service.

The business that uses lead generation will also find that it is a cost effective way to have their business out in the public eye. The repeated sales this type of advertising will bring will far out weight the cost of the initial startup. If for no other reason there is the availability to potential customers interested in this type of product or service that might not have found this specific business.  It is also a way of promoting a business where there is not much effort to find these potential customers, but rather they find the business and already have an interest in the product or service.

This is also a much faster way of making a final sale than other forms of enticing potential customers to the product or service, as well as the fact that these customers are pre-qualified.
